The Rhode Island teacher shortage is growing due to increasing retirements and too few new teachers to fill the open positions. WPRI reports that this year, nearly 10% of Providence teachers left their teaching positions, causing major disturbances in student learning. Students are greatly disadvantaged when they do not have a fully qualified, certified teacher in the classroom. The latest teacher shortage report shows 435 teacher vacancies plus 692 underqualified instructors in Rhode Island.
Teacher Shortage reports claim, "Based on news and state reports, we estimate that there are at least 55,000 vacant teacher positions in the United States."
