Teacher Shortage in Rhode Island
The Rhode Island teacher shortage continues to affect schools, students, and districts across the state. Many public schools are struggling to fill open teacher vacancies due to retirements, limited new applicants, and expiring federal funding. According to Deputy Superintendent Zack Scott in an interview with the Herald, “The Providence Public School District is facing financial challenges...driven by the expiration of federal funds and nationwide declines in enrollment.”
As ESSER funding expires, these staffing challenges are intensifying. In the Providence Public School District, 367 teachers received displacement orders requiring them to seek new positions or face unemployment. This reduction adds stress to the teaching profession and puts students at risk of falling behind.
Statewide reports confirm the severity of the crisis: 435 teacher vacancies and 692 underqualified teachers remain unfilled across Rhode Island. The shortage spans core subjects like math and science, as well as special education, leaving schools unable to meet the needs of every student.
Across the country, teacher shortages are among the most pressing education issues, with the most recent Teacher Shortage report showing more than 49,000 vacant teaching positions nationwide. In Rhode Island, sustainable change will require targeted resources, stronger teacher recruitment, and policies that make it easier to retain and support qualified teachers year after year.
