Teacher Shortage in South Carolina
Education suffers when students do not have access to the teachers they deserve. The Maryland Department of Education highlights that “10.7% of Maryland teachers [are] not returning to teaching in the State in the 2023-2024 school year.” They report 1,964 vacancies on the first day of school from the 2023-24 school year.
Maryland State Department of Education reports, "While teacher vacancies continue to increase, total enrollment in Maryland’s Educator Preparation programs has declined by 33%. Teacher supply issues have long predated the COVID pandemic, and there were nearly 2,000 educator vacancies in Maryland in September of 2021."
Ultimately, the most recent teacher shortage report shows 6,724 underqualified teachers in Maryland during the 2021-22 school year.
Teacher Shortage reports claim, "Based on news and state reports, we estimate that there are at least 55,000 vacant teacher positions in the United States."
