The Scope of the Teacher Shortage in New York
Teacher Shortage reports estimate “at least 49,000 vacant teacher positions in the United States" as of the 2024-25 school year. New York has faced increased shortages year over year.
The New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) reports that state officials estimate New York will need more than 180,000 new teachers over the next decade. The teacher shortage is already affecting both urban and rural districts, especially in specific certification areas and high-need areas.
Shortages have been worsened by early retirements and the effects of the pandemic, with higher rates of turnover among experienced educators. According to the Learning Policy Institute, 7% (or 14,735) of teachers in New York were teaching outside of their certification areas.
