Teacher Shortage in New York
The New York teacher shortage has increased year over year. Students are facing increased competition for limited teacher attention and resources. The New York State United Teachers explains that “as state officials estimate New York will need more than 180,000 new teachers in the next decade, the teacher shortage is already hitting selected subject specialties and geographic areas. Big city and rural districts are reporting severe shortages in many subject areas.“ A lack of education in students turns into a lack of qualified teachers. COVID-19 has exacerbated the issue because more teachers are retiring early without eligible replacements.
The Learning Policy Institute reports, "Seven percent (or 14,735) of teachers were teaching outside of their certification areas."
Teacher Shortage reports claim, "Based on news and state reports, we estimate that there are at least 55,000 vacant teacher positions in the United States."
