The Scope of the Teacher Shortage in Nevada
According to a report from the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, both rural and urban areas are facing severe staffing gaps. The report highlights that reliance on long-term substitute teachers, especially in rural schools that are already underfunded, can significantly harm student learning outcomes. Critical vacancies include middle and high school specialists in advanced science and technology fields.
The most recent Teacher Shortage data shows 1,078 teacher vacancies plus 5,324 under-qualified teachers in Nevada during the 2024-25 school year. While the number of vacancies reduced by over 500 since the last report in the 2021-22 school year, the number of underqualified teachers increased by almost 2,000 from 3,706. These numbers match the growing reliance on long-term substitute teachers who don’t specialize in their subject areas.
Nationally, Teacher Shortage reports estimate “at least 55,000 vacant teacher positions in the United States.”
