Delaware has a teacher shortage that leaves students without qualified instructors. According to the University of Delaware, the most critical subject areas are Math, Science, World Languages, English Language Learners, and Secondary Special Education. When a district cannot find a teacher for the class, they place a substitute who may not be able to offer the same level of expertise as a certified teacher. Ultimately, the most recent teacher shortage report shows over 500 teacher vacancies and under-qualified teachers in Delaware during the 2021-22 school year.
In April 2021, Frontline Education surveyed 1,200 district leaders to discover that two out of three respondents reported having teacher shortages in their schools. This is a record high since launching the survey in 2015.
