Teacher shortage in Minnesota
Students are experiencing reduced access to advanced placement and honors courses due to the teacher shortage. Minnesota is struggling to hire fully licensed teachers for their classrooms, so they are turning to those with provisional licenses. The Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board analyzed the supply and demand of teachers in the 2022-23 school year. 84% of surveyed districts reported a significant impact because of teacher shortages. The report also highlights the exponential increase in teachers who leave the profession the longer they spend teaching.
MPR News reports, "The Professional Educator Licensing and Licensing Standards Board (PELSB) found in its 2023 report that between 80-90 percent of Minnesota districts were significantly impacted by teacher and substitute shortages."
Teacher Shortage reports claim, "Based on news and state reports, we estimate that there are at least 55,000 vacant teacher positions in the United States."
