Teacher shortage in New Jersey
New Jersey’s teacher shortage continues to challenge public schools across the state, especially in critical areas such as computer science, math, and special education. According to the latest Teacher Shortage report, there are around 49,000 open teaching positions across the United States.
New Jersey's education report shows nearly 200 open positions and around 11,400 underqualified educators during the 2022–2023 school year. Despite having one of the nation’s smallest shortages, New Jersey’s teacher workforce still faces strain as districts compete for talent and teacher burnout grows.
While short-term solutions, such as rehiring retirees, have been proposed, they fail to address the root causes of teacher shortages. According to the New Jersey Education Association, sustainable progress depends on stronger teacher certification pathways, mentorship for student teachers, and fair teacher compensation. Governor Phil Murphy’s administration has prioritized removing unnecessary barriers and expanding access to teacher candidates through initiatives like Act 1669.
The Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University also notes that improving workforce development pipelines is key to attracting new teachers in New Jersey. By focusing on multilingual learning, low-income students, and flexible credentialing like provisional teaching certificates, the state can better prepare educators for diverse classrooms. Retention strategies—such as smaller class sizes, improved working conditions, and better pay—are vital to strengthening the teacher workforce and ensuring equity in public education.
