Teacher shortage in New Jersey

New Jersey has teacher vacancies in several essential subjects. "Reported shortages for the 2020-21 school year span science, math, special education, world languages, career and technical education and English as a Second Language,” according to a U.S. Department of Education database. Ultimately, the most recent teacher shortage report shows 196 teacher vacancies plus 2.937 under-qualified teachers in New Jersey during the 2021-22 school year.

Some short-term solutions have been raised. "Fearing a potential teacher shortage this fall, two New Jersey lawmakers want to allow retired educators in ‘critical need’ subject areas to go back to work while still collecting their pension." This is unsustainable as the teacher shortage grows and retirees are unwilling to return.

Teacher Shortage reports claim, "Based on news and state reports, we estimate that there are at least 55,000 vacant teacher positions in the United States."
