Idaho’s teacher shortage is worsening due to low retention rates. Magic Valley News states, “30% of Idaho teachers quit teaching by their fourth year.” Teachers are moving away from the profession too quickly to be replaced by qualified teachers. When a district cannot find certified teachers, they are forced to place underqualified substitutes in the classroom. Students receive a poorer education without a certified teacher.
In April 2021, Frontline Education surveyed 1,200 district leaders to discover that two out of three respondents reported having teacher shortages in their schools. This is a record high since launching the survey in 2015.
