Indiana teacher shortages affect core classes and career-preparedness electives including Business, Computer Science, Fine Arts, and World Languages. Former State School Superintendent Jennifer McCormick said, “Unfortunately, this shortage continues to spill into areas not only critical to Indiana’s educational plan, but areas that prepare our students for a bright future.” Without exposure to these career choices in school, students can be stunted when picking college majors and technical schools for their futures. Ultimately, the most recent teacher shortage report shows 980 teacher vacancies plus 952 under-qualified teachers in Indiana during the 2021-22 school year.
In April 2021, Frontline Education surveyed 1,200 district leaders to discover that two out of three respondents reported having teacher shortages in their schools. This is a record high since launching the survey in 2015.
