Teacher shortage in Indiana
The teacher shortage is causing increased stress and burnout among remaining educators as they assume extra responsibilities, ultimately impacting student learning. The Indiana State Teachers Association reports “Indiana’s teacher shortage is the result of just a few factors: salary level and potential for meaningful salary growth, workplace satisfaction, and outside support and appreciation. An incremental expansion in collective bargaining rights, buttressed by data demonstrating that the public supports such outreach, is relevant to both workplace satisfaction and outside support.”
Indiana has 1,675 teacher vacancies during the 2022-23 school year as well as over 6,000 underqualified teachers. Teacher Shortage reports claim, "Based on news and state reports, we estimate that there are at least 55,000 vacant teacher positions in the United States."
