Pennsylvania administrators are concerned about the lack of incoming education majors. College students studying education are necessary to replace retiring teachers every year. Unfortunately, the number of education graduates has dropped by half. Additionally, teaching certifications have dropped by 74% in the last decade. This signals a grim outlook for new teachers to fill vacancies in the Keystone State. Ultimately, the most recent teacher shortage report shows 343 teacher vacancies plus 1,085 under-qualified teachers in Pennsylvania during the 2017-18 school year.
In April 2021, Frontline Education surveyed 1,200 district leaders to discover that two out of three respondents reported having teacher shortages in their schools. This is a record high since launching the survey in 2015.
