Kentucky is facing a teacher shortage in more than a hundred districts across the state. Critical subject areas include Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Special Education, English as a Second Language, Health, Art, and Music. The lack of teachers and substitutes has caused some districts to close for several days due to low staffing. Ultimately, the most recent teacher shortage report shows 806 teacher vacancies plus 245 under-qualified teachers in Kentucky during the 2021-22 school year.
In April 2021, Frontline Education surveyed 1,200 district leaders to discover that two out of three respondents reported having teacher shortages in their schools. This is a record high since launching the survey in 2015.
