The teacher shortage crisis in South Dakota is an ever-present issue. State Education Secretary Tiffany Sanderson says, “Every school district in South Dakota is dealing with staffing shortages for the upcoming school year.” They are missing qualified classroom teachers, substitutes and bus drivers. Without proper staffing, students suffer because they have larger classes and less individualized attention.
In April 2021, Frontline Education surveyed 1,200 district leaders to discover that two out of three respondents reported having teacher shortages in their schools. This is a record high since launching the survey in 2015.
