In February 2022 Mississippi Today reported, “The Mississippi Department of Education estimates that 54 districts within the state are experiencing ‘critical’ shortages in special education, STEM, elementary education, and foreign language fields, with over 2,000 unfilled positions across the state. However, Mississippi's inability to calculate the exact number of teacher vacancies through compiling data serves as a scapegoat for legislators to ignore the problem of inequitable education. In turn, the education gap is widened as students in low-income areas like the Mississippi Delta are supplemented with uncertified teachers or long-term substitutes.”
In January 2023, they report, "Certified teacher vacancies in Mississippi have decreased since last year, with 2,593 reported for the 2022-23 school year according to the Mississippi Department of Education. The state did not start tracking its critical teacher shortage until 2021, when the department found just over 3,000 public school teaching positions were either completely vacant or held by teachers who were not properly certified."
Ultimately, the most recent teacher shortage report shows 2,593 teacher vacancies in Mississippi during the 2022-23 school year.
Teacher Shortage reports claim, "Based on news and state reports, we estimate that there are at least 55,000 vacant teacher positions in the United States."
