Maryland is facing a dire teacher shortage and students are at risk. WMDT states, “Maryland educators say there’s a dire need for more teachers. ‘The teacher shortage is real. We’re having a real problem with retaining teachers,’ said Clinical Practice Coordinator at Salisbury University’s Seidel School of Education Paul Gasior. Education suffers when students do not have access to the teachers they deserve.
Maryland State Department of Education reports, "While teacher vacancies continue to increase, total enrollment in Maryland’s Educator Preparation programs has declined by 33%. Teacher supply issues have long predated the COVID pandemic, and there were nearly 2,000 educator vacancies in Maryland in September of 2021."
Ultimately, the most recent teacher shortage report shows 1,616 teacher vacancies plus 6,724 under-qualified teachers in Maryland during the 2021-22 school year.
Teacher Shortage reports claim, "Based on news and state reports, we estimate that there are at least 55,000 vacant teacher positions in the United States."
