Ector ISD Expands Use of Proximity Learning

The virtual education firm, which connects certified teachers with students in grades kindergarten through 12, provided American Sign Language II at Permian and Odessa high schools in the fall semester.

ECISD currently has about 230 teacher openings. The human resources and curriculum and instruction departments recommended six additional classes at the high schools to help fill the instructional gap.

The agreement with Proximity Learning will fill a little more than five openings with Texas certified teachers to deliver ECISD curriculum to students four days a week.

A fulltime paraprofessional facilitator, substitute teacher, or current teacher receiving a stipend would support the virtual classroom, including classroom management and instruction.

Proximity will provide training and support for the facilitators.

The estimated cost of $154,225 is for a full semester, supplemental agenda material said. It would be billed monthly and prorated.

The cost for five full-time teachers would be $163,809.25 for a full semester, the material said.

Additional funds will be required to compensate the facilitators and that funding will come from unused teacher salaries, the material said.

Lilia Nanez, associate superintendent of curriculum and instruction, said for some of the courses, there were teachers during the first semester. But they resigned over Christmas break.

Nanez said she doesn’t know of any area outside of West Texas that has this much of a teacher shortage.
