Quakertown Community PS – Quakertown, PA

Objective:  Quakertown Community PS wanted to offer Chinese as a World Language option to their students

Problem:  First tried to offer their students access to Blended Learning classes in the past from a well-known online company and found that 80% of the students did not want to continue the following year.  The district was going to drop their Chinese program due to the lackluster results and the tighter budget available.

Solution: Over the summer the Superintendent attended a conference and met a representative of Proximity Learning Inc. (PLI) who described the virtual K-12 staffing solution of streaming live teachers into the classroom during the school day aligned to their bell schedule.  She brought this information back to the district and invited PLI to meet with her team. Quakertown decided to try out Chinese I and II the first year to see if their students would have a better experience.  PLI worked with them to set up the classes they needed and to enroll the students.  Quakertown adopted PLI’s Chinese Curriculum so PLI gave every student access to our online Learning Management System to access their course content. Once the school year ended the district found that 95% of their students wanted to take the next level of Chinese and were satisfied with the class. Now more than 6 years later Quakertown offers Chinese I-III for all its students and is planning to expand to American Sign Language and French.
